Are mermaids real?
No one really knows for sure.
Do entire civilizations of merfolk live in enchanted underwater castles and cities in societies a lot like ours?
Maybe since the ocean is so vast and deep, merfolk have managed to remain hidden. In fact, scientists suspect that approximately 90 percent of the ocean is unexplored. That leaves a lot of ocean where mermaids can hide!
Even though lots of people have seen mermaids, no one can absolutely prove they exist. On the other hand, no one can fully prove that they don’t exist either.
We do have eyewitness accounts. Even famous people have seen mermaids. Christopher Columbus, the famous explorer who discovered America, wrote in his journal that once while he was exploring the Caribbean, he saw three mermaids rise high out of the water. The sight must have been thrilling! But Columbus was disappointed. He didn’t find them beautiful or enchanting at all. I think he must have seen mermen instead!
Henry Hudson, who discovered the Hudson Bay in the United States, saw a mermaid in 1608. In his journal he described her as having white, pale skin and long, black hair. Her tail was shaped like a porpoise, and speckled like a mackerel.
And John Smith, an American explorer who was a friend of Pocahontas, actually fell in love with a mermaid! The story goes that John saw a lovely maiden swimming and immediately felt the first stirrings of love. Apparently he found her long green hair quite attractive! He was talking and flirting with her from aboard the ship when he was jolted by something shocking. From the waist down, she was a fish!
Those sightings happened centuries ago, but people still see mermaids in our day. Glimpses have been specifically reported in the 20th and 21st centuries in Canada, Israel, and Zimbabwe. Truly, throughout the centuries, countless numbers of sailors have reported seeing a mermaid swimming off the bows of their ships in every ocean around the globe.
Scientists believe that the sightings are cases of misidentification—that people are actually seeing manatees, dugongs, or some other ocean species.
Columbus, they say, saw three manatees. Most people laugh at that theory saying someone would have to be at sea an awfully long time to think that a manatee is a woman or mermaid—or have really bad eyesight! I think that someone who had been on the ocean as much as Columbus would have seen manatees before and would know the difference.
A few years ago, Animal Planet aired two documentaries that claimed to have proof and scientific evidence that mermaids exist. Unfortunately, the “scientists” that were interviewed on the show were actually actors. People were angry and confused. Were the shows real or fake? Do mermaids exist or don’t they? Finally the United States government issued an official statement: “no credible evidence of the existence of mermaids has ever been found.”
But what is out there in that mostly unexplored world of the ocean? Could evidence that mermaids exist someday be found?

I do believe mermaids exist! After all, 70% of ocean hasn’t been discovered. And how could someone just make up a mermaid without any ideas?

Did you know that mermaids are half human and half dolphin? It’s true! If they were half fish, they would look more like a shark! Fish tails are sideways while dolphin’s tails are just like a mermaids tail!

Mermaid Kayla is right mermaid realy do exist but the are afraid to come out because we humans may kill them.In my country the come out at the midnight in rivers or beach.But i have never and if i see one any day i will run never to go back to that place.

mermaids are real I seen 2 but they didn’t look like mermaids people always talk about they have gray tails there skin is a pale gray color they have black and brown hair and gills on their faces and a male merman looks like the females just with flat chestes and bigger gills

I do believe that mermaids are real. Even if we seen part of it that doesn’t mean that they are fake. I mean yes maybe at times people see sea creatures and thinks it’s a mermaid, but what if there not just sea creatures. I would love to see one d be one.

So the episode of two men who was in Egypt I think who filmed a mermaid that was in the ocean was that real/ fake? Cause the Mayor/ president was given a award of millions if one had proof..

You are correct luna but even if one day someone did come across a mermaid looking creature I wouldn’t get to close because it could be a siren. Sirens are tecnicaly the oppisite of mermaids sirens aren’t afraid and if your a male the siren will sing and you will go into a trance and you will get closer than all the sudden the siren grabs you and pulls you under water and kills and eats you.

Mermaids are DEFINITELY real. They aren’t seen very often because, although some humans might be kind to mermaids, there will always be humans that want to capture them, study them, and perhaps kill them. So mermaids hide from humans. Mermaids are also hard to find because we have forced them deeper and deeper into the oceans. Mermaids used to live in ruins that had been sunk into the ocean long ago, such as boat wrecks and cities that used to be on the coastline that are now covered in ocean water. But now that humans have the proper equipment to explore those areas, they had to leave their homes and move deeper into the sea, where it is too dangerous for humans to go.
Even humans who love mermaids and claim that they would never do anything to hurt them, may already be hurting mermaids. They may be hurting mermaids by polluting their home, the ocean, and killing the animals that live within it. Believe it or not, these things effect mermaids, a lot. Would it hurt you if people filled your home with trash? In the long run, yes, it would.
Mermaids might come out of hiding when humans change their ways.

They can be real of we want them to be. Maybe they are scared that humans will want to take them from their homes so they hide away to be on the safe side. I love the idea of meeting one, maybe just maybe if they are out there they’ll relise we are NOT here to hurt them.
