Fin Fun presents a new mermaid story from Mermaiden Serena
I can barely contain my excitement at discovering another way to experience landfolk! As you know, I LOVE interacting with our two-legged friends on the shore. Their “legs” fascinate me and I enjoy watching them frolic in the sand. Especially the little humans – their giggles and playfulness remind me of my favorite sea friends.
As you can imagine, now that I have returned home to the Mediterranean Sea, I can’t stop thinking about Calisto and the humans she was in contact with. Surely, they realize what kind of sea bug she is, but does that make them evil, too? Too many questions float around in my mer-brain as I ponder what they could be scheming.
Just like my sisters, I received a scroll from the MerCouncil asking the whereabouts of my precious stones from my princess coronation. From what I hear, none of us have had a stone go missing, but we haven’t received any further communication from the council members.
I am so confused! I guess no news is good news, right? My scale-senses tell me that this has something to do with the humans, so Picasso and I decide to explore the beachfront to see if anything looks suspicious in our part of the sea.
As my FinFriend and I glide through the water, I use my special powers to paint little stars and hearts with the tip of my finger. The bright colors of the shapes fade quickly in the water, but I love the ability to create a little art on the go. Our sea is almost completely surrounded by land, so it’s easy to get lost in the flowing colors and not worry too much about losing my way. Because I’ve grown up here, I can recognize certain structures and colors that help me judge how far I’ve swum from home.
I pop my head up from time to time to see if I can spot any land dwellers, while Picasso hovers closely in case I decide to swim away quickly. When under the water, I can sense that we are nearing one of my favorite places to spot a human. I break the surface slowly to avoid drawing attention. From the tummy up, I look just like you, so I can use this to my advantage as long as no human gets too close. My eyes immediately scan the shore for any sign of activity.
I strike gold!
There are hundreds of walking folk sprawled out on the shore looking at three landmen standing on a big, boxy platform. It appears that the landmen are speaking to the people, but I can’t understand what they are saying. My eyes search the faces of the listeners, hoping to gain some insight. Darn it. I wish Mariana were here to sense what kind of mood these folks are in. From the looks of it, they aren’t celebrating anything. It seems more serious than that.
Suddenly I see it. How could I have missed it?
My heart begins to race as I realize what is happening. Now it’s clear as a crystal.
An oversized sign sits boldly in the sand amongst the land folk: “Catch a Mermaid, Win the Grand Prize!” Below the words, a drawing of a mermaid fluke caught in a net seems to sneer at me.
I dive back under the water and Picasso does his best to keep up with me as I race home. I must tell my parents about this immediately.
Their advice will be crucial to figuring out what to do next. Are we in danger?
